Report: Everglades Restoration Project Bogged Down By Political Climate
 A new National Research Council report written by a committee chaired by OSU professor of civil engineering Wayne Huber, finds "troubling delays" in the $10.9 billion campaign to restore the Everglades. The report, which says costs are escalating and deadlines passing without a single project being completed, attributes the delays to insufficient spending, particularly by the federal government. Bioengineering Undergraduate Student Seeks New Cancer Treatment
 Working alongside OSU chemical engineering professor Christine Kelly, undergraduate bioengineering student and OSU Presidential Scholar Erin Rieke is seeking ways to treat cancer with microscopic nanoparticles that would keep healthy tissues from being exposed to the harmful effects of chemotherapy or radiation. Big Beam Team Wins 3rd Place at Nationals
 A student team from the OSU Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering placed third and won $1,500 at the 2006 National Big Beam Competition, sponsored by the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute, where teams fabricate and test a precast, prestressed concrete beam. OSU team members included: Shane Brown, Nick Hernandez, Quang Nguyen, and Rob Ranit. Faculty advisor was Keith Kaufman, with help from Pat Hynes of Morse Bros., Inc. in Harrisburg.

Dean Adams Travels To China, Cements Relationship With Chinese University
 During an August visit to China by OSU Dean of Engineering Ron Adams, OSU President Ed Ray, and others, the university signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Tsinghua University, one of China’s leading institutions of higher education. Proximity to OSU Engineers Helps Salem Aviation-Products Company Grow
Garmin International, manufacturer of navigation and communication equipment, is expanding its Salem, Ore. operation, thanks in part to its proximity to the OSU College of Engineering. John Macnab, Garmin AT's general manager, praised OSU for turning out the innovative employees the company needs. "We have been fortunate to be close to Oregon State. At the annual fall breakfast on September 20th, the College of Engineering recognized and honored its most exemplary faculty, staff, and students for their work during the past year. So Long Computer Desktop Clutter! OSU Technology Acquired by Seattle Firm
Smart Desktop, Inc., a software company launched by two OSU computer science professors who are determined to make computer desktops "smarter" for users working on multiple projects, was recently acquired by Pi Corporation of Seattle. The new technology, developed by professors Jon Herlocker and Tom Dietterich, could revolutionize the way people and computers interact, making it easier to manage multiple windows and files on computer desktops. http://oregonstate.edu/dept/ncs/newsarch/2006/Jul06/desktop.html

Kelley Engineering Center Is "Greenest" New Engineering Building in U.S.
The Kelley Engineering Center has been awarded a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council, making the OSU building the first new LEED Gold academic engineering building in the nation! Construction Engineering Management Alumni At Work in Afghanistan
Col. James R. Lyman, commanding officer the 41st Brigade and a graduate of the OSU Construction Engineering Management program, is serving in Kabul, Afghanistan along with six other OSU alumni in his staff of 350. This summer, Lyman and fellow Beavers were able to obtain a television connection in time to watch the final game of the College World Series. They sent their congratulations back to Oregon in the form of this photograph. Boating Accident Claims Engineering Grad While Serving in Peace Corps
 Justin Wesley Brady, a 2004 graduate of the OSU Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering, died last month in a boating accident while serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the West Africa country of Mali. After graduating from OSU, Brady worked for a partnership of construction companies building the new San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. Contributions in his name can be made to Engineers Without Borders.

All proceeds support the El Salvador Water Project, where OSU student members of Engineers Without Borders are helping bring clean water to El Salvadoran villages. October 10: Author Elizabeth Grossman talks about her new book, "High Tech Trash"
Grossman issues a warning about the growing global issue of "e-waste" and in a section, "How to Recycle a Computer, Cell Phone, TV, or Other Digital Device," summarizes the resources now available to those with a cyber-conscience. "There is an urgent need for e-waste regulation, and Grossman's informative, harrowing, and invaluable report—is essential."
