More than half the US population lives within 75 km of the coast, and, worldwide, that percentage is even larger. At the same time, most of our shorelines are experiencing erosion because of the accelerated trends in sea level rise.

Coastal engineering draws from several disciplines including civil engineering, oceanography, and marine geology to solve complex problems resulting from the urbanization of coastal areas and shoreline recession.
