Dear Colleague,
We are pleased to invite you to participate in the NEES Tsunami Facility Usage and Tsunami Modeling Workshop on July 27 and 28.
The objectives of this workshop are to
- promote the use of the NEES Tsunami facility and related infrastructure,
- discuss existing numerical modeling efforts and available physical model data
- make recommendations of future use of the tsunami facility, particularly by promoting collaborative use of large physical models and the integration of numerical simulations and physical model observations.
User Training of NEES Tsunami Facility at Oregon State University (Day 1)
In 2000, the National Science Foundation designated Oregon State University as the site for the next generation, shared-use facility for tsunami research as part of the Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES) consortium.
In April 2001, Oregon State University hosted a workshop to discuss the development of this facility, including wave generation, instrumentation, IT and related infrastructure. In September, 2003, OSU held the opening ceremony for the completion of the facility, and on October 1, 2004, the facility began operation under the guidelines of the NEES consortium. In 2005, OSU received an additional grant to purchase instrumentation related to the tsunami facility. The operation and maintenance of this facility is scheduled to continue through 2014, and the future use of this facility will form the basis for the first part of the workshop.
User Training for the NEES Tsunami facility and related infrastructure will be the first item for the workshop. “User Training” includes demonstrations and explanations of
- the physical capabilities of the tsunami wave basin and large wave flume
- existing instrumentation and data acquisition systems
- online data archival, retrieval and remote access capabilities
- NEES research program and related funding
- Use and scheduling of projects under NEES
In addition, there will be discussion on possible improvements of the facility to serve the NEES tsunami community.
Physical/Numerical Modeling of Tsunamis (Day 2)
A series of international workshops on long-wave models held in 1990, 1995, and 2004 reviewed the state-of-the-art of models and discussed future research directions. The second day of this workshop will have a number of short presentations on research related to numerical modeling of tsunamis, including calculations of the moving shoreline, wave breaking, modeling of bathymetry and topography, landslide generated tsunami, and tsunami forces on coastal structures.
Talks will also include a review of available of physical model data; recently acquired data at the NEES tsunami facility, including focused solitary waves (breaking, non-breaking), wave inundation on a complex 3D bathymetry, and pressure measurements on a plane cylinder; and advances in experimental methods.
Schedule and Logistics
A workshop for tsunami inundation modeling is proposed for July 27 – 28, 2006, in Corvallis, Oregon. Travel and lodging expenses for up to 30 people will be covered by the NEES Tsunami Operation and Maintenance agreement.
